Who Is Involved in Kidney Trafficking?

Part 2 of 5

There are 3 groups:

1)    Criminals
Many of them are the same perpetrators who are involved in sex trafficking and child trafficking. Organ stealing is a sophisticated crime.

  • Mafia heads own the black market
  • Recruiters travel to remote villages to prey on the poor and the desperate
  • Transporters travel with victims to hospitals to harvest organs
  • Doctors, nurses, and hospital staff interview victims who are coerced into signing documents stating they are donating their organs to a family member.

2)    Victims
They are poor, uneducated, and unworldly. Sometimes they are victims of a natural disaster that renders them homeless. Sometimes they are refugees. In recent history, Syrian refugees sold their organs to buy passage to Europe.

3)    Buyers
Desperate people who are in need of a life-saving kidney transplant. They have the means to buy an illegal kidney for $100,000 or more, and they can travel to get surgery. Today, most of the buyers are from Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.
